Hi Leon,

Hope you are well

I am undertaking research into stroke rehabilitation for the purpose of a new design for hand therapy and I am wondering if you would be able to answer a few questions for me?

I would like to know what type of therapies were used on your hand? How did you find the therapies? Beneficial? How is your hand at present?

Thanks for your time,

I have posted a survey on the IMPROVING ARM AND HAND FUNCTION page if you would like to have a look.

Guest Greetings All,

Firstly what a great site I have been using a forum based in the USA which was ok plenty of useful info, but finding this one based in the uk is fantastic !!!!!!!

Right, as the heading says I had my stroke in April 1990 I had an aneurysm of the left middle cerebral artery which caused a (SAH) Subarachnoid haemorrhage.

Like the creator of this website I too was an HGV driver but luckily I had stopped for my rest break I had got out of my cab to go to the services as I got out I went down like a sack of spuds !!!!!!!!!!!! and passed out.

I was taken to Southampton general hospital and after have an MRI scan was transferred to the neurological dept once there I was put in an induced coma as my head was swelling a day later I had open surgery to tie of the blood vessel as back then stenting was not available as that did not come along until 1992.

I stayed in this induced coma for 2 mths and then after a further 6 weeks was transferred to my local hospital for further recovery and physiotherapy for a further 6 weeks.

After stroke care ow is 100% better now than it was then I say this because I was sent home with nothing except an appointment for 6 months later.

After being home for 6 months I returned to work full time and that is where I stayed until Sept 2008

September 2008 I got made redundant and despite my attempts to get work I found no one willing to take me on if fact one employer ask why I was looking for work and said I was better off on benefits.

So with that I went back to my doctor to get more physiotherapy because you see I had drop foot, contracture of my toes and claw right hand.

I transferred from JSA to I.B and set about trying to get DLA the reason being after 18 yrs of work it took its toll.

I was carrying the weight of my body on my left side this over the years caused pain in my hip as well as pain in my left knee and ankle plus my hand was useless

March 2009 I had a heart attack due to hypertension again i was admitted to hospital for a week to have angioplasty and a stent fitted

I went home with a cocktail of tablets and an angina spray.

I am now not working but to be honest I am enjoying the time as i can do things at my pace.

I am awaiting a decision on my DLA CLAIM and looking for voluntary part time work I would love to work with animals if possible.

I have a 5 yr old border collie who is my soul she picks me up when I'm feeling low
